Chemical Safety Awareness

Course Aim:

This is a half day course designed to provide the course participants with the appropriate knowledge of their responsibilities within the 2001 Chemical Agents Regulations and an understanding of the safe steps required to safely interact with hazardous materials. The students are tutored by instructors with many years of experience in front line emergency fire service who are passionate about the training they deliver which guarantees student interaction and participation resulting in an enhanced learning outcome.

Course Objectives:

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Understand responsibilities under the Chemical Agents Regulations 2001.
  • Identify chemical hazards in their workplace by their symbols and labels.
  • Be aware of Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) as a last resort.

Course Content:

  • Discuss relevant statutory legislation and its requirements.
  • Introduction to hazardous materials.
  • Routes of entry of hazardous materials into the body.
  • Classification of different chemicals.
  • Warning signs and Labels.
  • Toxicology.
  • Materials Safety Data Sheets.
  • Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Spill Control Measures.
  • Chemical Control Measures.
  • Safe Disposal Controls.

Training Methods:

Classroom presentation on multimedia, supplemented by videos, and discussions throughout the course as well as a practical demonstration on the use of spill kits. The students complete a written exam and course assessment at the end of the course.

Course Attendance:

Maximum number of 12 participants per course.
Half day or 1 day duration depending on requirements.
